Today was a snow day, and you know that I LOVE snow days. It's probably a "hidden" requirement for the teaching profession -- look forward to and enjoy those snow days! So... today, I'm not sure what got into me, but I was on a roll. First up was to try making a set of these microwave bowl holders. My stash of fabric needs to shrink, so this seemed like a good project to help with that. They are a bit "wonky" looking, but I think they will do their job.

The other thing I really wanted to do today was decorate cookies. I've never tried using royal icing for cookie decorating. Today was the day to try. Not bad for my first attempt, but I must say, this task took a whole lot more effort than I expected! Now it's time to put my feet up and have a cup of tea.

Snow Days have come early this year, and are a delightful surprise! It has given me a bit of unhurried time to work on the blue and white quilt. Maybe -- maybe, -- maybe I'll finish it by Spring.

My morning has been filled with cutting, piecing, sewing, and trimming blocks.
Placing the blocks is one of my favorite parts of the quilt process. This is the first try of many more sure to come. Progress so far ... 10 blocks finished and 6 more to go.

It really is not a chore, though. Being surrounded by the beauty, variety, and possibilities of the vegetable choices is, for me, a delight.

A number of years ago I made a market shopping bag as part of a Patchwork, Please! sew-along. When I made this bag I used a plastic coated painters drop cloth for the main bag fabric, and did not line it as was suggested by the pattern. It has work well, and has carried many groceries! But, alas, it is looking a bit worn and the plastic coating is peeling on the inside.

A pretty fabric find at a local hobby/decor store inspired me to make a second bag -- this time with the proper lining.

The fabric -- duck cloth, cotton, and laminated cotton for the lining -- were all found at HobbyLobby.

But now, the "bug" to journal -- and to sew -- is hitting once again. When I look back at the past 10 years sewing, I'm kind of amazed at myself. How in the world did I do as much sewing as I did while working as a full-time teacher?

This past year had several bumps in the road for me, but I did manage to complete a wedding quilt for my son and daughter-in-law.
After seeing an inspiration quilt by Noodle-head.com, I collected an assortment of fabrics that would give a similar look. This quilt is named Vast and is from Patchwork Essentials by Jeni Baker. I changed it a bit to make a larger quilt.
My mom gave me this great PVC pipe quilting frame she was no longer using. It worked great -- so easy to move the quilt and put it away if I needed the house to look uncluttered. ;)
I had hoped to whip this one out quickly, but it is taking time... Even so, the quiet repetition of stitch after stitch, has a rewarding outcome. I love to look at the progress and know that when this quilt comes off the frame I will be amazed! Last week we experienced a great loss -- the unexpected death of a special friend to our family. As we have looked at pictures, talked and told stories of many good times, I have realized again how the people we hold close, the experiences we have all add "threads" to our family story -- threads that when we step back and reflect fill us with amazement. "...Give thanks to the Lord, for he is good! His faithful love endures forever." Psalm 106:1
Today was the day. For the past number of years I've been contributing a purse or bag of some kind, and this year is was a leather bottom tote bag. This is the third one I've made since December, and I think the next one is going to stay right here with me! To the bidder on this one -- thank you, and enjoy!
Nope! This is not it -- just your ordinary (except that I used crust for one piece) peanut butter and jelly sandwich. Nothing fancy about this spring break lunch today!

A quilt sandwich is what you get when you put the backing fabric...
Next up will be figuring out how to get this into the quilting frame. It's an old one I bought at my favorite thrift store, and this will be my first try at using it. Here goes....
Instead of grandiose plans to spring clean the house, (which, by the way, never seems to be accomplished during Spring Break), my goals were to clean the refrigerator, finish piecing the quilt I've been working on, and make the quilt "sandwich" (fabric, batting, fabric) ready to put in the frame.
Last year I made three bags that were given as Christmas gifts. So, without further comments, here are some "Thursday Totes." The pattern for the leather-bottom totes was modeled after a tutorial by SeeKateSew. It is the perfect size for books, files, clothing, whatever!
For my friends at work, I am making a tote in this style for the auction. The feature fabric will be a duck cloth in this color... You will have to wait and see what fabric hides inside!

The third bag I made more of a shopping tote, although it could be used for any purpose. It does not having a lining, but very pretty, all the same. I'm not sure where the pattern came for this one. I follow some hand-written notes jotted on paper.
Be careful with a rotary cutter!

It finally happened...as I was zipping along trimming my quilt blocks for the quilt,

my hand slipped just a bit too close to the edge of the ruler and,
OUCH! ...a little slice of the side of my index finger...
G O N E!

Needless to say, I have kept my finger bandaged this week ... and have not done any more cutting, YET. I will get back on the "rotary cutter horse" and do it again!! I'm thinking a pair of close fitting rubber garden gloves -- not used for gardening yet, of course -- will be a good deterrent from this happening again!

I have had fun, though beginning to lay out the design. It is exciting to see a quilt take form!

BERNINA USA's blog, WeAllSew, featured a "Snowflake" quilt in October as a quilt-along project. The red and aqua color combination caught my eye. It is just the next quilt project I was looking for!
Thanks for stopping by! To those who follow my sewing blog ... I took a long break from blogging my projects. Keeping a record of my progress helps to motivate me, so.... because I have two quilts in progress, I'm going to "pick up the pen" again ... and the camera ... and the fabric ... and the needles ... you get the point! ... and get going on these quilts!

Enjoy your creative moments, whatever they may be!
This particular bag has gone to my school auction, scheduled for March 21. So, for any of you local friends, get your bidding ready! ;) I have been using my brown bag, and love it. It opens wide to fit lots of work to take home from school. Oh goody! :)
Project #2 for February was a table runner. I had picked up a set of fat quarters from Tuesday Morning some time ago, and finally got to making something with it. I've been seeing string quilt blocks on line and decided to experiment with that. Here is the result...
After piecing the front, I still had fabric left so decided to create a back with a different look. I've tried them both on the table and like them equally. This fabric is from a line called Holiday Bouquet, featuring Christmas balls, but I think the holiday theme is subtle enough to work at any time.

Today's post is the second installment of 2014 Christmas gift sewing. A Christmas idea came my way for a handmade tool holder/bag. Girls are easy to sew for, but for guys it gets a bit tricky. When this idea came, I jumped on it right away. My local fabric store has a great selection of leather remnants. The piece I wanted was huge (uh... yes, cows are big!) and they kindly cut it down to the size I needed. Here is the finished project...

My first all-leather project was a tool holder. Leather takes a bit of practice to work with. I used my regular sewing machine and a needle designed for sewing with leather, but it can be tough going!

The City Slicker bagIt has been two months since my last posting on this blog! 2014 sewing for me was definitely on a slower pace. In 2013 I completed 70 projects and posted about most of them, whereas in 2014 only 42 projects were completed. I say "only," but really, 42 sewing projects while teaching full-time is nothing to sneeze at! So -- on to some of those projects that never made it to a blog post. My sewing goal for this year (...just so I remember!) is to sew at least 52 projects, use fabric from my stash and stockpile a few small items for ready gifts.

The City Slicker bag has been my most challenging bag project ever. It really was not super difficult, but more time consuming than I anticipated. Of course, the fact that I gave myself about 2 weeks to work on it before Christmas (yep, it was a Christmas gift) didn't help. It was, however, a challenge well worthwhile! I love how the bag turned out, and the recipient -- a horse lover for many years -- was delighted!
It was such a fun project to pull out once in a while to work on. The pattern came from the imagineourlife blog. If you are interested in this kind of project, follow the link above to see many delightful quiet book pages.
I saw it and immediately knew this would be my next bag for carrying my things back and forth to work. After some frustrations with sewing through layers of leather ... my bag is complete!
Overall, I would say this was a simple bag to make. After taking some time off from sewing, it feels good to have a finished project again! Now for a few more finishes...

Fabric & handle supplies:
Outer body: 1/2 yard upholstery fabric from my local fabric store (with a lot left over!)
Lining: Nothing fancy! ... from local store
Leather inset: Recycled leather (also from local fabric store)
Handles: Fabric.com
It was not fancy, but very functional! This year, I made one to replace the old; this one has quite a bit more style to it!
I find it interesting to see the two side by side. Either my taste in fabric has drastically changed, or the fabrics available these days are so much more interesting. Both statements would be true!
The long edges of this fabric were already finished, and all I needed to do was hem both ends! It doesn't get much easier than that! I love how it feels and will definitely be getting more designs to update my well-used dish drying towels.
If I am not careful they will be sprouting up everywhere! The idea of reusing, remaking, recycling has always intrigued me. While an object was made with a specific purpose in mind, I love to find new and sometimes unexpected uses for the same object. Enter -- the glass mushrooms!
These little cuties were inspired by my sister-in-law. She hosted a party recently and in her garden were tucked "mushrooms" similar to these. At the base she had a "lit" battery operated votive candle. It was so pretty! Since then I've been looking at the glassware in thrift stores in a whole different light. And what do you know?? With a little glass adhesive and pretty glass, we have have mushrooms! What is sprouting in your garden?
A niece had asked me if I had any felt scraps and wondered if I could make some felt food for the anticipated arrival of her two sons. Oh, yes, I have felt scraps, and this opportunity was exactly what I needed to use some up! I was trying to think of a cute way to "present" the assorted foods, when I came upon a great blog with quiet book ideas. I made a few variations to the project shown on the blog, but used the pattern pieces offered for the most part. Here is my version...
Disclaimer ... Adults may be tempted to play with this! This was so much fun that I think I may need to try some of the other pages.Caryhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/05818447645958383321noreply@blogger.com1
